Day 1 – Arrival & First Impressions of a Global Power

  • Evening orientation walk through a modern district

  • Evening group meal and rest

    First glimpse of one of the world’s most influential capitals

Day 2 – Identity, Culture & Everyday China

  • Exploration of Nanluoguxiang and surrounding hutongs

  • Focus on:

    Identity, community and daily life

    Tradition within a modern global city

  • Street-level interaction and observation tasks

  • Guided discussion:

    How culture shapes national identity

  • Evening group dinner in a local restaurant

Day 3 – Power, Politics & Global Messaging

  • Visit to Tiananmen Square

  • Visit to the National Museum of China

  • Focus on:

    Political power and national narrative

    How states communicate identity to the world

  • Guided, visual-led discussion whilst standing at the centre of China’s story

  • Evening at the hotel

Day 4 – Diplomacy, Global Relations & Influence

  • Exploration of Beijing’s embassy and diplomatic districts

  • Focus on:

    International relations in practice

    China’s role in global decision-making

  • Seminar-style discussion:

    Comparing global political systems

  • Evening visit to Wangfujing Street

  • Observation of:

    Global brands, influence and consumer culture

 

Day 5 – Global Crisis Simulation: Decision-Makers for a Day

  • Workshop in a dedicated meeting or discussion space

  • Global Citizenship Simulation Challenge

  • Students take on roles as:

    World leaders

    Policy-makers

    International organisations

  • Scenario-based challenge (e.g. climate crisis, trade conflict, global health)

  • Negotiation, debate and decision-making

  • Final presentations and outcomes

  • Wow moment: Taking part in a high-energy, real-world global negotiation

  • Evening at the hotel

Day 6 – History, Belief & National Identity

  • Visit to the Temple of Heaven

  • Focus on:

    Historical belief systems and governance

    The role of tradition in shaping modern identity

  • Reflection linking past to present and Understanding how centuries-old beliefs still influence modern China

  • Evening cultural performance (acrobatics, theatre or music)

Day 7 – Global Reflection & Celebration

  • Final reflection session and discussion

    How perspectives have changed

    China’s role in the global system

  • Student-led discussion and sharing

  • Workshop and reflection in a lakeside setting at Houhai Lake

  • Farewell celebratory group dinner overlooking Houhai Lake
